NIRCO Secures Grant Funding to Expand Warm Handoff and Recovery Support Services in Lake County

Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. Funds Program to Address Opioid Use Disorder Crisis

Waukegan, IL, September 26, 2024— Northern Illinois Recovery Community Organization (NIRCO) is excited to announce it has received grant funding from Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. (AHP) to support its Warm Handoff and Recovery Support Services programs (WARM). This initiative will deliver peer recovery support services to individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) and polysubstance use disorder (PUD), particularly those experiencing housing transitions in areas disproportionately affected by the opioid crisis.

Through the WARM program, NIRCO will work closely with key partners, including the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Lake Behavioral Hospital, Kalimba Foundation Recovery Housing, Gateway Foundation - Lake Villa, and Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center. The program will provide essential peer-led recovery services to individuals transitioning from jail, inpatient treatment, and homelessness, particularly in the low-income communities of Waukegan, Zion, and North Chicago.

Mary Roberson, EdD, LCPC, CSADC, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of NIRCO, emphasized the program's significance:

"This funding is a game-changer for NIRCO and the communities we serve. The warm handoff model provides a safety net for individuals at their most vulnerable moments, offering them immediate access to peer recovery support services. With the support of our partners and this grant, we can offer hope and tangible resources to those battling opioid use disorders in Lake County. It means we are not only addressing the crisis but also empowering individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience."

NIRCO’s efforts are part of a broader initiative to tackle the opioid crisis in Lake County, where rates of both fatal and nonfatal overdoses remain alarmingly high. With this grant, NIRCO will provide critical services that bridge gaps in care and ensure seamless transitions for needy individuals.
